Swing booths: the 250 that actually decide your seat

Every campaign says it targets swing booths. Almost no campaign can name theirs. The gap between claim and execution is the difference between winning and losing a close seat.

What counts as a swing booth

A swing booth is any polling station that either flipped party in one of the last three cycles, or whose winning margin drifted more than 15 percentage points across cycles. On the average Assembly seat with 280 booths, this is roughly 50 to 70 booths. Everything else is already committed either way.

Why community drivers matter

A booth does not swing at random. It swings because a specific community inside it has shifted, or because turnout inside a specific community is moving. If you know which community is driving the swing you can send community-matched captains and message with the right idiom. If you do not, you send generic vans and generic messaging into a booth that needed a specific response.

The 21-day rule

The last three weeks of the campaign are where swing booths move. Not the first three. Frontloading swing booth outreach is a common and expensive mistake. The tactical window is short and needs identified booths, matched captains and a very tight message.

  • Day 21 to 15: identify the swing booth cluster and the community driver inside each.
  • Day 14 to 7: deploy community-matched captains. Message-test in the first two clusters.
  • Day 6 to 1: turnout ops in your strongest swing booths only. Do not spread thin.

Frequently asked

How is a swing booth different from a weak booth?+
A weak booth is one where you are losing structurally. A swing booth is one where the outcome is genuinely in play. Weak booths get diagnostic attention. Swing booths get execution attention.
Are swing booths the same as neutral booths?+
Neutral booths are one type of swing booth, where neither side has a clear lead. But a booth can also swing because a community driver is moving. Both are covered in our dossier.
